Toronto, ON, Canada [October 8, 2009] — Brother & Sister Productions in conjunction with the Department of Culture, City of Medellin, present a special free screening of the documentary film, La Dany, Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 6 PM, at the Lido Theatre, Medellín, Colombia. Shot on location in and around the Prado district of Medellín, the film documents the colorful and extraordinary life of street performer, Dany Castaño Quintero, better known as “la Dany.” Admittance to the screening is free and will be followed by a panel discussion on LGBTQ issues in Colombia.

“We are very excited to be holding the first screening of La Dany in Medellín and are grateful to the City of Medellin for their assistance in organizing this special event,” says Jim Giles, the film’s co-director.

For over 20 years, “la Dany” has entertained the crowds gathered in Bolívar Park following Sunday evening mass. Provocative and unpredictable, Dany is a unique talent among the buskers and indigents who crowd the downtown square. The 80-minute documentary weaves footage from her show, interviews and re-enactments into a compassionate portrait of a uniquely resilient and courageous individual.

Filmmaker Jim Giles was introduced to Dany during a 2007 trip to Medellín with Associate Producer Ariel Jiménez. He and his creative partner and sister, Julie Giles, returned with a small crew in the summer of 2008, spending two intimate weeks following and interviewing Dany, her family, assistants, neighbors and fans. Post production on the film wrapped earlier this year. This will be the first public screening.

Born Fernando Castaño Quintero, “la Dany” grew-up in the Bello, a suburb of Medellín.  A natural extrovert, Dany started performing in primary school winning many prizes for her creativity. At 15, her life changed forever when she was kicked-out of home and ended-up living on the streets. She has been performing in Bolívar Park since 1988.

Following the 6 PM screening, there will be a panel discussion on LGBTQ issues in Colombia with Jim Giles (Director/Writer/Producer), Ariel Jiménez (Associate Producer), Marcela Sánchez Buitrago (Executive Director, Colombia Diversa) and Luis Miguel Úsuga Samudio (Secretary of Culture, City of Medellín).

La Dany was written, directed and produced by Julie and Jim Giles of Brother & Sister Productions. Cinematography by Antonin Lhotsky. Editing by Karen Shopsowitz. Associate Producer Ariel Jiménez. Line Producer(Colombia) Edwin Posada. Featuring music by Alex Cuba, Ron Davis and Diego Marulanda with a score by Colombian-Canadian percussionist Rubén “Beny” Esguerra.

La Dany screens Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 6 PM, at the Lido Theatre, El Centro, Carrera 48, No. 54 – 20. For more information, visit the official movie Website at http://ladany.com or access updates via the La Dany Facebook FAN page.
